Candidates and clients often ask us whether the interview process differs for interim assignments. Below are some frequently asked questions that attempt to assist both parties when interviewing.Candidates:
How does the interim interview process differ?
The process is all lead by speed and is dependant on the length of assignment. Decision-making will usually take no longer than a maximum of 1 week and can be as little as an hour. For very short term cover there will often be no interview but typically for a longer term role there is a maximum of two stages in the interview process, in some cases a working interview will be appropriate.Is the interview technique different?
Yes. Because the process is faster, first impressions are imperative.
- Candidates need to communicate that they can hit the ground running and use relevant examples.
- Confidence needs to be built immediately.
- Interview questions/answers need to be concise yet complete.
- Flexibility is absolutely key in terms of being able to work autonomously or within a team.
- Don’t think this will be just an informal chat – be just as prepared as if it were a permanent interview.
Do I discuss salary details?
Generally speaking, no. This should have been discussed already by the consultant. (see our interview advice page for more information) If it has not, a conversation post-first interview should be carried out in order to negotiate the most competitive rate.

Do I need to ask different questions?
Questions will be all based around the specifics of the assignment. So instead of going through the CV in chronological fashion, you will ask specific questions relevant to the work you would like the individual to carry out. You will also probe heavily on their style and how they like to work to enable team fit and suitability.
The interview is an opportunity to gauge a candidate’s flexibility and adaptability to the (no doubt!) varying nature and level of work that will come their way. This may not be through particular questions, but general perception.
Who do I need them to meet?
Because of the speed involved they only need meet their very immediate colleagues, such as direct reports or a member of line. This will ensure speedy decision-making.
